André Kertész (2 July 1894 – 28 September 1985), born Kertész Andor, was a Hungarian-born photographer known for his groundbreaking contributions to photographic composition and by his efforts in establishing and developing the photo essay. In the early years of his lengthy career, his then-unorthodox camera angles, and his unwillingness to compromise his personal photographic style, prevented his work from gaining wider recognition.

Tribute to Diego Velazquez Las Meninas (Spanish for The Maids of Honour) is a painting by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age. The work’s complex and enigmatic composition raises questions about reality and illusion, and creates an uncertain relationship between the viewer and the figures depicted.

The SPILL Performance Tarot

The SPILL arts festival commissioned photographer Manuel Vason to work with a range of ‘maverick’ artists of the 2009 festival, with each artist restaging one tarot card. The Magician card was shot at Treadwell’s Bookshop, using Treadwell’s props, staged by performance artist Helena Hunter. Those who know the shop will recognise the background to the striking image.
Great Photo. Great lighting. Reminds me of Grant Morrison, Calligula, and David Lynch all at once.
